Skills & Experience
Photoshop & the Adobe Package digital design -The Boy In A Dress saw us stylising the entire set as though it was a drawing. There was extensive work in tuning every detail within the set to adhere to this design brief, down to the sweet packets in the corner shop.
Treatments of fabrics through dying, distressing and print-making. An understanding of fabrics and their properties.
Hand and machine sewing - extensive work with upholstery, embroidery, piping, quilting. A knowledge of how to use different weight fabrics with machines.
Leatherwork, in book binding, bag making, upholstery.
Upholstery & Soft Furnishings - A challenge I’d faced in upholstery, was the pleather daybed of Hamlet. Pleather it easily torn, so it doesn't machine well. It was piped and buttoned. Working on the bed in A Christmas Carol was a highlight too, with a lot of pattern matching, varying fabrics and having to conceal an actor who later emerged as a magic trick!
Calligraphy - an understanding of the different writing styles, techniques and materials throughout history.
Book making - In our recent production of Museum in Baghdad we needed a ledger which was seen in the early 1900s, and then seen again in 2011 worn and used. I chose to make them both new and distressed one.
Mould-making and Casting, Fiberglass. For our production of Provoked wife, there was a banquet scene with a half eaten roast chicken. I was tasked with taking a mould from a real raw chicken, and recreating it in non-perishable materials. I also worked on the beast in The Duchess of Malfi. The beast had to be water-tight, life-like and get stabbed and bleed every show. We created skin grafts to replace the stab wound, and lay silicone over leather to create a skin texture.
